Are double glazed windows soundproof?

Our Expert Answer...

This is a question of terminology. Double glazed windows are NOT soundproof. But they do reduce outside noise to varying levels depending on the quality of the units, the fitting, the location of your home and the materials used.

A poorly fitted window may have microscopic gaps between the frame and your brickwork. Whilst you may not be able to see these with the naked eye... to a sound pressure wave travelling at around 700 miles per hour it’s a piece of cake.

A good, solid, airtight window unit that is perfectly sealed into your building will have significant noise reduction properties but a poor fit could result in limited noise reduction.

Typically a Safestyle unit can provide around about a forty decibel reduction in outside noise. The trick to lowering noise doesn’t just come from the way that soundwaves move through the two panes of glass and the Argon gas layer. The PVCu frame is also a factor.
